And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28 is my life verse. My story is one of addiction and God's sweet redemption. I struggled with depression for years due to a chronic pain condition and I turned to pain pills to deal with the pain. My deliverance was not a one step, sudden healing. My recovery and healing was a process. The important thing is that I am, by God's saving grace, delivered from addiction and learning more about this grace each day. During my recovery, I was frustrated and discouraged because I had convinced myself (and others encouraged this false belief) that I was not being healed from chronic pain because I did not have enough faith in Christ. I thought I wasn't being healed because something was wrong with my walk with God. He has a purpose for me. He allowed this in my life for a reason. Because I struggle with physical pain daily, I have to rely so heavily on Him and trust in His perfect strength, not my own.

Throughout the whole process of dealing with my pain and breaking free from addiction, God reminded me of 1 Peter 5:7 which says "Cast all you anxiety on Him because He cares for you". I can trust God's plan for my life, even when I don't know exactly what it is, and I can put all of my fears and inadequacies in His hands. This is where true peace is found. Some people may interpret Romans 8:28 as saying that God works everything out to our benefit...that there is good in every situation. I believe there is some truth to that interpretation. But I believe the verse is saying that God will be glorified in everything we go through. By obeying God and praising Him in our struggles, we receive the blessing, not necessarily through our comfort. Once I found freedom in Christ from addiction, He gave me a new song to sing! It is because He has saved me and set me free that I now teach faith based recovery in prisons and worship through gospel music to praise Him for all He has done.

I tell you all this so that you may be encouraged through what Christ has done in my life. Stay encouraged...if your battling with depression, hold onto the sweet words of our Savior....remember that he promises us that joy does come in the morning. Challenge yourself not to isolate~that's exactly what the enemy wants you to do. And for those who are struggling with addiction, reach out to the great physician. He will renew your hope, no matter how long it's been. And once you begin experiencing that hope again, joy and peace will begin to flow back into your life.
