RULES & GUIDELINES FOR SINGING CONTEST:
Open to singers (solo or group). The song may include - but will not be awarded for - instrumentalists, dancers, songwriters, or other talent at this time. There is no minimum age, but children must be able to sing well to enter the contest. There is only one contest -- one category. There are not different categories, such as youth, female, male, group, etc. Every performer is judged among all the others. We provide a sound system (microphones, jacks for electric instruments, stage monitors, speakers and a CD player) and a sound engineer to play the CD and adjust the sound. We do not provide musical instruments, music stands or clips, instrument stands, seats, or accessories. Songs should have Christian-themed lyrics (a gospel song). The style of the songs should be: country, Southern Gospel, bluegrass, pop, etc. Sing one song, no longer than about 5 minutes. Singers must provide an accompaniment CD (traks) (unless singing a cappella with no accompaniment) AND/OR - your own live accompaniment (musicians and their instruments) OR - bring your own cassette player (if your track music is on cassette tape) It is the responsibility of the performer to be sure that the CD is not scratched and will work well for the performance. If the CD fails to play well, a backup song should be provided for a performance either right away, or later in the program as the situation demands. Label your accompaniment CD (full name & phone) and anything brought on stage so that it may be clearly identified as yours. Do not take anything from the stage that does not belong to you. Label your CD (& CD case) with your name and what track to play. Songs will be performed live in front of the audience and judges. Bring a lawn chair if you want for seating before and after your performance. Winners will be announced at the end of the contest that night. The top 3 will be invited to sing at the "Konawa Gospel Sing" the next night with a song of their choice. Payment of the entry fee is required before performing (Payable to: The Gospel Station, memo "singing contest"). No auditions are required but participants should have a good ability to sing the song they choose. If you have a band that needs to set up, arrive at the stage no later than 5:00 to set up your instruments. Any band instruments must be taken offstage immediately after the performance if possible, or at the end of the contest if it would cause distraction or delay to do it earlier. The order of singers shall be determined by the staff of the singing contest. The decisions of the winners of the talent contest are final and at the discretion of the singing contest staff. Each song will get its full play. However, singing contest staff have the right to interrupt a song for sound quality, technical difficulty, or any other reason. Performers must be present to win. No alcohol or drugs are allowed; no tobacco allowed onstage. Profanity is not allowed. Any performers or musicians who are incapacitated will not be allowed on stage to participate. Stage clothes should be clean, in good condition, modest and not too revealing. This is a performance and clothing should be business-casual to dressy. No message on the clothing or accessories should endorse anything that would be considered offensive to a Christian audience. If there are doubts, we will ask you to have other clothing available. No tube tops. No mini shirts. Shirt and shoes must be worn. Jeans are permitted. Sunglasses are allowed (stage faces the overhead/setting sun). The singer(s) shall be ready when their group is called. The singer(s) shall quickly take the stage, and motion when they are ready to begin the song. To keep the flow of the contest moving, the singer(s) shall enter the stage, perform, and leave the stage in a timely and professional manner and shall not give a commentary, long introduction, naming the performers, etc. Avoid comments (my favorite song), excuses (I have a cold, my guitar's not acting right), or complaints (I can't sing in the heat). Performers and their crew need to present themselves with professionalism, stage presence and poise. The song should be memorized or sung in such a way that the one(s) singing should read the lyrics as a backup, at a glance, and not holding a lyric sheet close to the face. The song should be in a proper key for the singer(s)' vocal range. If there is a choice of LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH key on the track, the performer must know which track they want to sing with, to tell our sound engineer which track to play. There will not be a rehearsal on stage. Any rehearsal done onsite can be done away from the stage, as long as it does not distract from those performing onstage. The singers and any accompanying musicians, family, helpers, children and guests, should behave in a courteous manner to the sining contest staff and volunteers, and the audience. Any rudeness, profanity, threats, or unwelcomed behavior will give cause to the perfomer being disqualified for either performing, and/or for winning. Child care is not provided. Any children must be attended by someone in the performer's company. No children under 10 are to be left unattended. Children are not allowed onstage unless participating in the song. Performers shall allow their photo to be taken for use of promotion in our literature and online, including their name and hometown. Performers have the option to be available to sign autographs for those in the audience. Flyers, sign-up sheets, etc., cannot be passed through the audience. Performers and those with them shall be respectful of the other performers in the contest by not causing distrubance or distraction to them or to the talent contest staff and volunteers before, during or after the others' performance. A liability waiver might be asked of the performers to hold harmless The Gospel Station et al from injury, and a release form signed to allow the Gospel Station et al, to use a quote, photo or video of the performer in publications, print and online. Banners may be placed on the backdrop of the stage. They cannot be larger than 3' x 4' and must be approved first by the singing contest staff before displaying them.
